Samaria Gorge is the largest gorge in Crete, with a length of about 18 km. It is considered one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe thanks to its outstanding natural beauty found throughout the hiking trail.
Since 1962, it has been proclaimed as a national park.
Every year thousands of visitors from all over the world cross the Samaria Gorge. These are people of all ages, who visit the gorge to experience one of the most important habitats of flora and fauna in the Mediterranean.
The sightseeing tour starts from Xiloskalo (a location that is in the entrance of the canyon), the highest point of the plateau, named Omalo. You will pass through the perennial trees, through paths surrounded by fountains with crystal drinking water and if you are lucky enough, you will see Cretan wild goats – the renowned Kri Kri, an endangered species which finds a shelter in this area.
During the tour, you will notice that the canyon gets narrow and at some point it reaches 3m, while the height reaches 700m.
At the end of the 7 hour tour (depending on your pace), the Libyan Sea and the beaches of Agia Roumeli will be revealed .
This is the wild and pure beauty of southern Crete. Enjoy!
